Restoration Summary, March 31, 2024

In January Conrad Schmitt Studios presented us with two options for a painting plan. The winning option had blue highlights on the transept ceiling, and an open stencil design on the ribs, based on stencils in old photographs of St. Stephen’s. Here is the computer mock-up that was proposed by Conrad Schmitt Studios:

And here are some close-ups of the what it looks like, now that most of the painting is done:

As the project progressed, God’s people showed their generosity, and new opportunities for improvements opened up. We will be replacing our lamps in the lanterns, keeping the classic look, but with higher powered bulbs which are dimmable. This will greatly help visibility during evening services.
We are also moving forward on flooring. Two carpet samples were displayed to the congregation in late March, and with an advisory poll we chose this design called “Wrought Iron.”
May be an image of welcome mat
Pews will be respaced since they are presently unevenly spaced. Some were closer together, especially in front. We will have a space of about nine feet in the back, both for more room to move, and for additional gathering space before and after services. Notches for wheelchairs will be added in front. The carpet in the chancel (altar area) will be replaced with hardwood, and the steps in front of the altar will be widened to better accomodate classes and choirs singing in the front. (We presently have one 18 inch step and a 9 or 10 inch step.) Some flexible seating will be put on the south side in the back anticipating an audio / visual / lighting desk.
